The son of William Hamilton, he married Elizabeth lnu. in 1860, but children, if any are as yet unknown. In 1860, he was a boatman living in Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 5" tall with brown hair and black eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg September 2, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Muddy Branch, Montgomery County, Maryland, October 31 as a private with Co. D, 46th Pennsylvania Infantry. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer November 10, 1863 at Decherd, Tennessee, and honorably with his company July 16, 1865, at Alexandria, Virginia.

By 1870, he was a blacksmith by trade and later became a member of Harrisburg's Hartranft Post No. 58, G.A.R. He died from "apoplexy." His death certificate claims a birth date of October 5, 1826.
