In 1860, he was a laborer presumably living in Shrewsbury, York County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census and could possibly have been living nearer to Hanover. He stood 5' 11" tall and had brown hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg April 25, 1861, as a sergeant with Co. G, 16th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 30, 1861. He is in the company register as "Shanesy."
2. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-six and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg February 10, 1864, as a private with Battery A, 3rd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery (152nd Pa), promoted to corporal, date as yet unknown, and honorably discharged with his battery July 11, 1865. He is in the company register as "Shanessy."

He also enlisted as "Shannessy" in Harrisburg with the post-war regular army October 2, 1865, and assigned to Co. I, 6th U.S. Infantry. He re-enlisted at Charleston, South Carolina, October 2, 1868, and honorably discharged at term's end October 2, 1871, at Dry Wood Creek, Kansas, a private.

He married Anna B. "Nancy" Erisman August 4, 1872, in Hanover, York County, and fathered George Henry (b. 08/22/73), Mary Magdalena or Margaret (b. 08/13/77), John Daniel (b. 12/17/79), Anna Catherine (b. 03/11/82), Joseph Augustus (b. 10/09/84), Caroline T. (b. 10/29/87), Gertrude (b. 03/06/90), and Jennie M. (b. 04/16/92). By 1880, he was living in Harrisburg where he died suddenly while carrying firewood at his home. The article describing the event spells his surname "Shannessey," but it is listed here as it appears on his tombstone.
