In 1860, he was a farmer presumably living in or near Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census. He stood 5' 10" tall and had dark hair and dark eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of eighteen in Harrisburg October 8, 1861, mustered into federal service there October 19 as a private with Co. D, 45th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged at term's end October 21 1864.

He married Frances Amelia Boell ca. 1864 and fathered John W. (b. 09/14/64), William F. (b. 06/07/66), Harry W. (b. 05/??/76), and Lulu Julia (b. 07/03/82 - married Charles M. Walter).

Neither an obituary nor a death certificate was found for him in online resources.
