The son of Johannes F. & Mary Elizabeth (Myers) Hoflich or Haifleigh and stepson of John Eckard, in 1860 he was a blacksmith presumably living in or near Westminster, Carroll County, Maryland, although he is not found in that census. He stood 5' 7" tall and had dark hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Westminster August 13, 1862, mustered into federal service at Baltimore September 1 as a private with Co. C, 6th Maryland Infantry, and promoted to corporal November 22, 1863. On June 12, 1864, he transferred to the 16th Company, Veteran Reserve Corps, and honorably discharged July 6, 1865. His surname is spelled a variety of ways in his compiled military service records, but "Haiffley" is most prevalent.

He married Mary Elizabeth Yeagle February 21, 1867, in Carroll County, Maryland, and fathered Lillie Mae (b. 01/17/68 - married Eugene Wilson Suydam), Anna M. (b. 12/??/69 - married Robert J. Gamble), Caroline Belle & Mary B. (b. 12/31/77), and Katharine G. (b. 07/07/81 - married Harvard C. Zacharias). He died suddenly from "acute endocarditis" at his daughter Lillie's home.
