The son of George Mark & Jane Elizabeth (Crawford) Kulp, in 1860 he was a printer living in Kiskiminetas, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-one in Philadelphia on July 11, 1864, mustered into federal service there on July 19 as a corporal with Co. K, 197th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company on November 11, 1864.

One obituary in the Harrisburg Telegraph erroneously places him in the 179th Pennsylvania Infantry, but others have the correct regiment.

After the war, he studied medicine and practiced for about two years in Marysville, Perry County, then abandoned that career in 1869 to work for the railroad operating a store, retiring from that position.

He married Sarah Ruby Meredith May 27, 1884, and fathered Alfred Cleveland (b. 10/24/84), Catharine (b. 02/11/87), George Mark (b. 04/23/89), Helen Meredith (b. 12/08/90, d. 03/07/00), Nancy Isabella (b. @1895), James Crawford (b. 09/20/97), and Martha Mildred (b. 03/16/99 - married Richard Fox Einstein).

The cause of his death is listed as "chronic bronchitis" with "cardiac asthma" as a contributing factor.
