US Marine LCPL Carl Edward McBee, Vietnam Veteran, Native of Asheville, NC.

US Marine Lance Corporal Carl Edward McBee was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the US Marine Corps, LCPL McBee served our country until June 6th, 1965 in South Vietnam. He was 23 years old and was married. It is reported that Carl died when his helicopter was involved in a mid-air crash with another helicopter. His body was recovered. Carl was born on March 10th, 1942 in Asheville, North Carolina. LCPL Mc Bee is on panel 01E, line 132 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for 4 years.

Carl Edward McBee was my third cousin. He was the son of Ulysses Simpson (Buster)McBee & Mae Bell Davis McBee. He was killed in a mid air crash between two helicopters and was one of eight Marines killed on June 6, 1965 at the age of 23. Carl, you and I never met. We shared Mitchell County, North Carolina Mountain heritage. I will remember you in all I do so your death and Sacrifice will be remembered and honored. Your cousin, Danny A. McBee, Sergeant, USAF 1967-1971,

On 07 May 1965, US Marines from the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Brigade began landing near Chu Lai. HMM-161 was one of the helicopter squadrons which supported the initial landings. Initially embarked in USS PRINCETON (LPH-5), HMM-161 shifted to USS IWO JIMA (LPH-2) which remained offshore Chu Lai until 07 June 1965 in order to support the Regimental Landing Team ashore. On 06 June 1965, two HMM-161 UH-34 helicopters launched from the USS IWO JIMA for a pre-dawn search and rescue mission, but the two helicopters apparently collided in mid-air at 0510 and both fell into the sea. Eight Marines were killed in the accident: Lcpl Carl Edward McBee was one of them.

Many may not believe me when I say this. But, I have been named after Carl Edward McBee. I am his great nephew born March of 1991. I am the grandchild of his brother Melvin McBee. All I have to say, is that he will live on, not just on this website, but through my name. Carl Edward McBee. Semper Fi!.
