Ogdensburg Journal - January 30, 1945
Pvt Robert Madlin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney L. Madlin, New York Avenue, was killed in action in Germany according to a telegram received by his parents this morning.
A telegram received by Mr. and Mrs. Madlin last Thursday reported Pvt Madlin missing.
The young soldier was a veteran of the North African and Sicilian campaigns and it is understood here that he was wounded in action in Italy.
In August 1943, several Ogdensburg people recognized Private Madlin in the 'new of the Day" shown at the Strand Theater. The film showed Pvt Madlin in Sicily, distributing American flags to Sicilian children.
Private Madlin enlisted in the Army in May 1942. Prior to his enlistment he was employed by the Standard Shade Roller Co. As a youth he worked as a carrier boy for the Journal for a number of years.

Body of the late Pfc Robert E. Madlin,son of Sydney L and Bertha Nicol Madlin, will arrive Monday at 8pm and will be taken to the home of his parents, 420 New York Ave where he will lay in state until Wednesday morning with a guard of honor.
Prayer service will be held at the home at 9:30 am Wednesday and 10'oclock at Notre Dame Church where a solemn High Mass of Requiem will be celebrated. Burial will follow at the family plot at Notre Dame.
The body will be met at the train by a color guard, escort, firing squad, and members of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. They will then proceed to the home.
Pfc Madlin took part in the Sicilian campaign after landing in North Afrida. He also participated in Anzio beachhead and later in the invasion in Southern France where he was first reported missing. Confirmation of his death on Jan 11, 1945 was later received.
He was awarded the Purple Heart citation posthumously, which his parents later received, signed by Adjutant Gen Ulio and Henry L. Stimson.
Surviving are his parents, maternal grandmother, Mrs. Anna Nicol, Hammond, several aunts, uncles and cousins.
