J. H. Allen was born 11-19-1812 in Tennessee and died 11-7-1869. John was the patriarch of the Allen family and was believed to have come to Texas with the Nowlin family from Hamilton County, Tennessee in 1853. His daughters Mary Frances (Allen) Nowlin, Rebecca Allen, Abinidah (Mrs. A.I. Purnell), and Lodema Allen are all interred in Old Hall.
