Mrs. Dillon was travelling with her daughter Miss Mae Maloney, who survived the disaster. The two women were part of a large group who supported one another in the water. They drifted with the current most of the way to shore, and then got caught in a tide rip a few hundred yards out.
After some time had passed, Mrs. Dillon became delirious, smiled, and then lost consciousness; according to witneses Mae Maloney repeatedly said "I do hope that mother will wake up" although it was obvious to the others that she had died.
