The son of Martin and Elisabeth Sine Wolfe.

Ami was first married to Lavinia or Luvenia Holden, listed as "Vini" in the 1860 census of West Virginia.
They were 18 years of age; Ami could well have served during the war.
They had five children in the household by 1870.

He married Rachel Feather in 1875.
Ami's census records include Preston and Harrison counties, WV. He was a farmer and farm laborer, the 1900 census gives education as 0 years.
The 1910 census enumerates Ami and Rachel, born in WV, married for 25 years, renting on a farm, able to read and write and living with grandson, Raymon, in Coal district of Harrison county, WV.

A faded, fragile image of Ami has been handed down through the family & said to be a Civil War era image. The image is on card and made by Rohrbaugh Bros. of Grafton, WV.
It is really too faded for me to tell much about his clothing, though family resemblance is definitely there.
A note hints he may have lived at Burk.

The place of death was left blank on the ledger entry. Ami died of pnuemonia and tuberculosis, aged 74 years, married, laborer - the informant was the physician JW Carder.

His sons:
William Waitman Wolfe,
Charles Albert Wolfe, linked - see below
Thomas J. Wolfe

Transcriptions have the names of both Ami and his nephew Ami Wolfe McGinnis; copied variously as "Amy", "Amie", "Annie" and "Arni".
It was pronounced with a short "a" and long "i" (like Am I?). In one instance, his nephew Ami was entered into a ledger as female, with the name Amy. The elder Ami is in his parents' household as a female Amy for one census. The younger Ami died the previous year, in Mineral county, also of pnuemonia, aged 62 years.
(one of our photographers helped prove the burial place).
It is good to always get an image of the original handwriting, if at all possible. If not for the picture of Ami, and the picture of the daughter of the younger Ami, none of the records with so many misspellings would have made sense; much arithmetic was required, and it took years to find enough census pages.

* May 2013. Our member 47437587 has found the clue to the years I was missing - sure enough, in the 1870 census, Ami is transcribed as "Ann"; but the image shows "Ami", male.

Thanks so much to her!

Further, from a second marriage record of son, William - father's name transcribed as "Ausi" - the image reveals, "Ami".
From this record, the mother's maiden name was given as "Holden".
- - -
To date, all records found for which an image may be viewed bear the name "AMI", with a dotted "i". All the transcriptions bear a wrong name, however.

Though today the name AMI (long "a", long "e") is used by the parents of girls, - in the 1880s was a masculine name, used by certain ethnicities. If you look closely, there are Ami in quite a few families of the region, one of them a clerk who signed marriage records.

The information for the location of Ami's grave was given to Icia Wolfe by a relative now deceased. Thanks to her and member 47500612 for relaying the message.
The grave is not marked.
