Olathe -- George J. Distel Jr., age 80, passed away early Saturday morning, March 12, 2005 at his home in Olathe. George was born on Aug. 20, 1924 at Montrose, Colo. to George and Mary (Holzmeister) Distel.


He spent his childhood in the Montrose and Olathe area and graduated from high school in Olathe, Colo. George and his family moved to Olathe from Bostwick Park, east of Montrose, in 1937 when George was 13 years old. He resided and lived the rest of his life and made his home in Olathe until the time of his death.He served his country in the U.S. Navy, serving four years during WWII. George was a rancher and farmer his entire life and was very proud of it.


He married Winifred G. Daniels on Feb. 5, 1955. The couple renewed their vows at St. Mary Catholic Church in Montrose at a later date. Winifred preceded George in death on May 12, 2001 at Olathe.


George was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Olathe and St. Mary Catholic Church in Montrose. He also was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Olathe for 57 years and was the former Post Commander of Olathe. He belonged to the Uncompahgre Cattleman's Association and served on the Board of Directors for the Olathe Co-op from 1973 to 1982.


He traveled with other members to see farm productions in other countries. George enjoyed fishing, camping and horseback riding, breaking horses and raising them. He was noted for his very straight rows in his field whether plowing or planting. He loved to dance, and he and his wife Winifred also met at a dance. They spent many happy times dancing together.


George is survived by sons: Bert Cannell and wife Arnola of California, Darwin Cannell of Montrose; daughters: Dorna Lee Bashor and Dorthea Tolkmit, both of California; 10 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; numerous great-great grandchildren; one sister: Mary Ann and husband Joe Schmalz of Nucla, Colo.; a sister-in-law: Donna L. Distel of Olathe, Colo.; and numerous nieces and nephews.


He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Winifred; two brothers, Clarence and Lawrence Distel; one sister, Agnes Krebs; one brother-in-law, Albert Krebs; two grandsons, Ricky Martinez and Richard Dean Cannell; and one daughter-in-law, Judy Cannell.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, March 17, 2005 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church with Father Don Malin officiating. Rite of Committal will follow the mass at Cedar Cemetery in Montrose. A Vigil and Rosary for the deceased will be held on Wednesday evening, March 16, 2005 at 7 p.m. at Crippin Funeral Home Chapel. Arrangements are being handled under the direction of Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.
