Calvin served in the Confederate Army with the hospital service and he was a scout in the Mexican War. A granddaughter recalls he had a scar on his face from a war injury. He is said to have died of pneumonia, after searching in the rain for a leather pouch containing gold pieces he had lost. (The pouch being found years later at the Cotton Gin in north Rome, GA.)
