Anti-Nazi Resistance Fighter
Born in the Ukrainian Jewiish shtetl of Romny, but some years later her family moved to Kiev, where she attended the secondary school.
After the German invasion of the Soviet Union Tanya Markus and her father Yossif Markusdecided to stay in the occuped city of Kiev as underground fighters and commited there several acts of Resistance
The most famous one happened just days after the invasion of Kiev, as a "Ukrainian girl" (Tanya Markus) approached a German military unit to "greet the liberators" and then suddently tossed a grenade, hidden in a bunch of flowers and killed four soldiers. A German tank started to fire around but was soon hit by a second grenade, thrown by Tanya´s father.
However, some weeks later Yossif Markus was identified as Jew and shot in the ravine of Babi Yar, where approximately 100 000 Jews as well as some thousand Romani people, Soviet war prisoners and Resistance fighters were murdered during the German occupation.
Tanya Markus herself could first escape the death.
In the documents prepared for her by the underground, she was given a Georgian name, Markusidze, and she adopted the guise of the daughter of a Georgian prince killed by the Bolshevists. As such, and as someone, who hated the Soviet regime, Tanya offered her service to the Germans.
Tanya was a beautiful 20-year-old and German officers sought her favors, enabling her to trap and shoot more than 20 of these officers, including an SS colonel in charge of hunting down the resistance fighters in the city of Kiev.
After his assassination Hitler personally gave an order to "find the terrorist" and soon the Gestapo suspected Tanya Markus.
She escaped Kiev, but was caught on her way to the partisans while trying to help an injured companion.
Despite five months of the most horrible tortures she did not give her captors any names or information; the Gestapo could not even discover her real identity, still calling its victim "the Georgian national Tatyana Markusidze".
In late 1942 the Gestapo tried to intimidate some captured Resistance fighters and threw into their cell Tanya Markus- streaming with blood and severely mutilated, but this act just strengthened the will of the prisoners, because Tanya whispered to them "No matter, how they hurt me, no matter how they are going to hurt me further, I will not tell them anything !"
On on 29 January 1943 Tanya Markus either was shot in Babi Yar or died of tortures in the Gestapo jail of Kiev.

Almost 50 years long the Soviet authorities refused to honor Tanya Markus- just because she was Jewish.
Only after the downfall of the Soviet Union she was finally recognized as great Resistance heroine.
2006 she was posthumously awarded the title of Heroine of the Ukraine and three years later her monument was unveiled in Babi Yar.
