Honor Awarded To Lt. Albright
Silver Star Will Be Posthumously Later
The Silver Star has been posthumously awarded to 1st Lt. John M. Albright, 2005 Battleground ave., for gallantry in action on December 18, 1944, while serving as commander of his company in the vicinity of Vitche, France, near the Maginot line, according to advices received by his mother from the war department.
Despite repeated enemy artillery and automatic weapon fire, the citation states, Lieutenant Albright led his company to the capture of three fortified positions and was mortally wounded in a valiant attack on a fourth fort. "His heroic behavior more than illustrated the high ideals of the military service and proved him worthy of the leadership entrusted to him." the citation reads.
Mrs. Albright was advised that the decoration will be forwarded to the commanding general of the fourth service command, Atlanta, Ga., who will select an officer to make the presentation.
Lieutenant Albright, who demonstrated outstanding characteristics of leadership, courage and skill as his company's commander, was 24 years old. He was a Greensboro native and attended public schools here, later graduating from Riverside Military academy, Gainesville, Ga., and also from V. P. I., Blacksburg, Va., in June, 1942, with the commision of second lieutenant.
Sent to Ft. Benning Ga., he remained as an infantry instructor until Feb, 1944, and also was advanced to first lieutenant before being sent to Ft. Bragg. He went overseas with the 100th division last September.
