OFFICER HORACE CLIFTON MOODY

KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY AS A HOUSTON POLICE OFFICER
Officer Horace Moody, Officer Ira Raney, Officer Ross Patton, Officer E. Meinke, and Officer Rufus Daniels were all shot and killed during race riots which were sparked by the arrest of several black soldiers assigned to Camp Logan. After being harassed by local law enforcement and citizens a large mob of the soldiers stole rifles and went on a rampage, shooting and killing a total of 16 people throughout the city.
Once all of the soldiers were taken into custody 110 of them were court-martialed and 19 of them were executed.
Officer Moody was survived by his wife Lilly and several children. They had been married for 18 years.
He received one wound to the left leg, which was amputated. He died in Baptist Sanitarium, likely from the having lost so much blood. His death certificate shows his parents were Martin and Cornelia Moody.
Officer Moody is buried Hollywood Cemetery, Houston, Texas.

Horace Clifton Moody was born on September 2, 1869 in Clark County, Mississippi to Mr.Martin Moody and Mrs. Cornelia Moody. He was the sixth child of nine born to this family.
He was killed in THE LINE OF DUTY as a Houston Police Officer during the Camp Logan riot on August 23, 1917.
He was survived by his wife, Mrs. Lily Moody, to whom he had been married to for eighteen years. It is believed that both he and Mrs. Moody had married children, but no names were listed in newspaper accounts.
He was laid to rest in the Hollywood Cemetery in Houston, now at the corner of North Main Street and the North Freeway. His gravesite is marked with a Woodmen of the World gravemarker, which reads FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH.
