Melvin was born on November 15, 1933 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to the late William Theodore Broomes and Eleanor Marie Broomes. As early as age 10, he displayed the attributes of professionalism, confidence, compentence, and skill. While enrolled in Philadelphia Public Schools, he received the Spanish, Award from Bartlett Junior High School, moved on to West Philadelphia High for a short time, and then to Saul High School, which was better suited to satisfy his love for horticulture, and where he graduated with honors.
He became interested in dance while performing with his sister Shirley and friends at Seger Recreation Center in Philadelphia. His dance career was interrupted when he enlisted in the United States Air Force, from which he received an honorable discharge. He attended college in Tucson, Arizona. He transferred to Temple University where he earned a degree in political science.
After graduation from Temple, his quest for adventure led him abroad. He traveled to Germany and ended up living there for two years. There he immersed himself in the country's language and culture, preparing himself for a career and life of travel. After a three-hour interview in German, he was hired by Lufthansa Airlines, where he worked for 25 years until his retirement. He wrote read, and spoke fluently in six languages; German, French, Spanish, Japanese, Creole, and Portuguese he also learned to sign.
He and his tales of adventure gave us only an inkling into the interesting life of this truly remarkable man. He and his stories will live on in our hearts...forever.
