Lelia M. Arrington, also known as "Nana" was born on September 1, 1925, the seventh of eight children born to Mattie and Emmitt Malone in Brunswick County, Virginia. She departed this life on Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at her home in the Bronx, New York.

She was educated in Virginia at Graves School and also graduated from St. Paul High School. She then married Otis Arrington, Sr and had four children. Although she was a wife and mother, she continued her education and graduated from Harlem Hospital Nursing School with a Licensed Practical Nurses' LPN Degree. She worked as a LPN at the Morrisania Hospital and Harlem Hospital where she worked as an Obstetrics Nurse until her retirement in 1990. Even though she was retired, she continued to volunteer her time. She volunteered as a Camp Nurse for a two week country camp on a military post in Peekskill, New York. Being the only Nurse, she was responsible for an average of two hundred children per summer for several summers. She also volunteered in her church – the New St. John Baptist Church as a Church Nurse and held several other positions,

Nana was loved not only by her family, but also by a host of relatives and friends and this was most notable during her two months illness prior to her death. People came for near and far, all hours of the day to see her. One relative said she never knew that she knew so many peo0ple, let alone being loved by them, yes she cared for others and they cared for her. She was kind and loving, always low-key, and as one woman had that kind of rapport with others. She had no enemies. Among her many positive attributes were her humility, her honesty, her fairness, her desire to make peach and her deep love and concern for others. When she saw a need she did not wait to be asked to help, she took the initiative and gave, whether it was monetary, food, a kind word or prayer. And the Lord truly blessed her in return. Because of her love for others, she had many social gatherings at her home. She even built a deck in her back yard so that she could accommodate the large numbers of people who came to visit her.

She was very concerned that education of the young be a priority. She encouraged her own children, grandchildren and great-grand children to strive for excellence. She was also on the Education Committee at her church to insure that scholarships were available for the youth.

Most of all she loved God. Her relationship with God began in her parents' home, followed by her attendance in Sunday school, and later her membership in the Piney Grove Baptist Church. When she moved to the Bronx, New York she continued her relationship with God and united with the New St. John Baptist Church where she had been a member since 1959. She used the Bible as the guide for daily living and was very interested in studying God's words.

Obedience to Gon's word was very important to her. When we would start something, she would not argue but asked, "Is that what the Bible said?" She was also enrolled in Bible Study at her church which she continued attending until January 2010 when she became ill.

Nana loved her family. She was preceeded in death by her sisters, Minna, Mable and Mary, and three brothers.
