Aunt Helen was a wonderful and colorful person. She was my mom's older sister; Helen and Mom were as different as night and day. Helen was a smoker and she loved to party. She always had long manicured fingernails and enjoyed jewelry.
Helen was married for the first time to John (Jack) Bebel of Endicott, NY. Her second marriage was to Clarence Wall. She finally married Ray Breese and they lived many happy years together.
Aunt Helen was very crafty, always making holiday items and gifts for others. Her house was a treasure trove of fascinating things. She used to serve the coffee and doughnuts at the Salina Town Hall on Saturdays when they would be having their defensive driving classes. She enjoyed visiting with all kinds of people.
Aunt Helen never had any children of her own. She treated her nieces and nephews (and later on her grand-nieces and grand-nephews) to shopping trips, dinners out, vacations and all kinds of fun.
I often stayed for the weekend at Aunt Helen & Uncle Ray's house in North Syracuse. Sometimes longer during summer vacation. There were lots of kids in their neighborhood, so I had many friends to play with. I remember all the neighborhood kids just walking into Aunt Helen's house any time, saying "Hi, Aunt Helen", and helping themselves to a lollipop from her kitchen drawer. When I told them Aunt Helen was REALLY my aunt, they didn't believe me. Apparently she was everyone's Aunt Helen.
When I was 16, Aunt Helen and Uncle Ray took me with them on a trip through Vermont, Maine, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. We ate lobster, visiting all the local attractions; we even took a ferry trip from New Brunswick to Nova Scotia. That was the same summer that Aunt Helen taught me to drive. Some of the things I do to this day make me think: Aunt Helen, I wish you were still here...we'd be having a heck of a great time!
