Airman John R. Howsare was the son of Eldon R. Howsare of 3144 Oak Ave. and had been a member of the Air Force since last October. He was stationed since November at Pope Air Force Base, NC, as a firefighter with the 464th Civil Engineering Squadron, following basic training at Lackland AFB,Tex.
He was born in Altoona March 6, 1941, a son of Eldon R. and Gertrude (Pfieffer) Howsare. Mrs. Howsare died in 1955.
Surviving are his father at the home, seven brothers and one sister; Donald in Air Force, Edward, Kenneth, Jerry, Paul and James at home; Charles of Gallitzin and Phyllis of Everett.
John was a letter winner in wrestling at Altoona High before graduating in 1959. He was active at the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church singing in the Radio Choir and teaching teenage Bible Class in Sunday School.

Sunday evening April 9, 1961, a special memorial service was held at his church to honor him by singing the songs he loved and tell his story. He had hoped to be home on Easter to sing with the group in the Radio Choir.

McCONNELLSBURG, PA (UPI) Three western Pennsylvania servicemen enroute home for Easter leave were killed and a fourth injured when the station wagon they were riding in was split in half after it swerved back onto the road and was hit broadside by a tractor trailer. Three victims died instantly and the driver was in the hospital with facial injuries. The bodies were taken to Carlisle Army Barracks for identification. State police notified Mr. Howsare who had to wait for contact from the Air Force before any plans could be made for burial.
John had been home three weeks ago and was not expected back for the Easter holidays, but was apparently picked up while hitchhiking enroute home.
