Joe was born the son of Etta Worthy and Claude Bostic on May 20, 1932. He was the youngest of their sixteen children. In 1950 he joined the U.S Air Force completing Mechanic training at Sheppard Air Base on January 6, 1951. He was then stationed in Japan for the duration of the Korean War.

In 1954, he became a Greensboro city police officer; a job which he would perform until 1972. He married Miss Sharon Bates on December 29, 1955. They had two sons, Joe Earl Jr. (1957) and Jeffrey Lynn Bostic (1958). He died suddenly and peacefully at his North Holden Rd home on tuesday, January 5, 1999 at the age of 66.
