Pioneer Merchant Passes Away At Home Here After Short Illness

Started Business in Small Shack In 1890 --- Funeral Was Saturday

El Reno's small group of eighty-niners lost one of its most prominent and respected members on Friday morning when James E. Kelso, founder of the Kelso department store here and until a few years ago manager of the business, passed away after a short illness.

Stricken with a heart attack Tuesday of last week, he passed away Friday morning at the age of 72 years. Despite his advanced years he has been in excellent physical condition and was active in assisting his son, Emerson, who has managed the store for several years. He was also a director and active worker in the Investors Building & Loan association.

Born in Auburn, Ill., on February 4, 1861, Mr. Kelso moved with his parents to Iowa at the age of four years. When he was 18 years old he moved to western Kansas and aided in the development of that pioneer section until 1889, when lie came to El Reno.
Opened In 1890
In 1890, the start of the Kelso mercantile business was made, when a general merchandise store was opened in a frame shack on North Bickford, where the Conservative Investment company is now located. In 1897 he moved to the present business location at 104-6 South Rock Island in 1908 the business was enlarged to cover two large business rooms. It was again expanded in 1930. when a new room adjoining it on the south was added as the men's department.

In 1906 Mr. Kelso was united in marriage to Miss Rose Goenawein, to which union was born one child, Emerson, who with his mother, survive. Other survivors are two sisters, Mrs. T. H. Teets of Boulder, Colo., Mrs. B. F. Bray of Orondo, Wash., and two grandchildren, Jerry Mae and Marcia Jane Kelso.

Funeral services were conducted on Saturday afternoon from the home at 519 South Williams by Rev. T. G. Mowry of the Presbyterian church, the deceased having united with this church during the Rayburn meetings in 1923. The casket was placed in the Maney vault in the El Reno cemetery pending the construction of a family mausoleum.

Active pallbearers were Morris Stock, L. C. Gadberry, Jim Rinehart, Marion Higby, Jeff Stanley and J. Paul Loosen of Okarche. Honorary pallbearers were Frank Kraft, I. C. Montgomery, H. K. Ricker, B. D. Ashbrook, J. T. Allison and J. F. Gadberry.
