CENTERVILLE — Norman Moody Straughn III, 69, died on Saturday, June 9, 2012, losing his 3 ½-year battle with cancer caused by the effects of Agent Orange during the Vietnam War.
Cape Cod lost a hero in a man who spent his entire life serving and protecting others. Norman died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving wife Susan, their devoted four children, and also some very dear and close friends.
Norman was born on Aug. 13, 1942, to Norman Moody Straughn Jr. and Gloria (Bassett) Straughn, and spent his childhood in Brewster, Mass. He graduated from Dennis Yarmouth High School in 1960. After graduation in 1960, Norman joined the U.S. Army where he eventually retired after 22 years of military service as sergeant first class.
Norman served several tours of duty during The Vietnam War and was awarded many medals: Bronze Star Medal (1 OLC), Army Commendation Medal (1 OLC), Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal (1st-6th Awds.), National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/ 60 Device, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/ Palm, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/ Silver Star, Combat Infantry Badge and the Drill Sergeant Identification Badge.
After Norman's retirement from the U.S. Army, he found work at Intercity Alarms where he retired in 2009.
Norman leaves his wife of 30 years, Susan, and their four children: Adina Sears and her partner Michael Toweel, Shawn Warburton and his partner Rebecca Smith, Brian Warburton his partner Erica Anderson, and Andrew Warburton and his wife Dawn.
Norman is also survived by his siblings, Kim and his wife Joe, Lem, Greg, Joe, Mickey and his wife Betty, and Sugar (Straughn) Henderson and her husband Jimmy; and many nieces and nephews.
Norman's memory lives on with his nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren: Jessica Whynott and her husband Steve, and their two children, Madison and newborn Alyson, Meghan Delman and her partner Mark Sargent, and their two children, Mason and newborn Monroe, Joshua Delman, Staci Warburton and her two children, Aaron and Caleb, Shaun Warburton, Dominique Warburton, Julian Warburton, Alec Schultz and Lucas Warburton.
Norman was not just an amazing friend, he was always a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Family and friends will honor his life by gathering for calling hours and memorial service at The Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home, 729 Route 134, South Dennis, from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 15. The memorial service will be performed by Rev. Dorothy E. Repoza.
On Saturday, June 16, at 11 a.m., there will be a military cemetery service for family and close friends at The Brewster Cemetery located on Lower Road in Brewster.
