In July of 1962, she was involved in a skydiving accident which gave her nationwide attention. Jumping for the first time, and with her fiance and later first husband to celebrate their engagement (according to newspaper stories), her parachute failed to open and she plunged into Mystic Lake at Marstons Mills. The water was 20 feet deep and further cushioned by soft mud at the bottom. She very luckily suffered only a cut nose and two hairline vertebrae fractures. It was her first and last jump. The story was covered by news media all over the country. In September of that same year she was a guest on the CBS-TV weekly program "I've Got a Secret".
