Herbert Leroy Gardner was born 6 Apr 1914, the first child of LeRoy George and Nancy Ella (Gerald) Gardner. He was born on his grandfather's family farm in Merrill, Aroostook, Maine. The family would remain in this same location throughout Herbert's childhood. Here he would be joined by his 6 siblings; E. Ellen, Sophronia, Flora, Eloise, John and Mattie. Here, the family would also suffer the loss of two of his siblings, John Henry, who died at birth, and Alice May, who passed away from pneumonia at 16 months.

On the 1920 U. S. Census Herbert is found with his parents and 2 sisters. ON the 1930 U. S. Census, Herbert is with his parents and 6 siblings and on the 1940 U. S. Census, Herbert is still living at home with his parents and 5 siblings. The 1950 U.S. Census has Herbert now living in Orlando, Florida. He had married Virginia (Hill) Vaughn in 946. Their daughter Gaye Alice was born in 1947 and is listed as a 2 year old.

Wanting to do his part during World War II, Herbert enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force on 01 July 1942 in Bangor, Penobscot, Maine. He enlisted as a Private and was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant on 27 Jan 1946. Until his deployment to the South Pacific, he was stationed in Brooksville, Florida.

After the war, Herbert returned Florida. It was there that he met Mrs. Virginia Mae Vaughn. She was the daughter of Richard and Emma (Entizan) Hill of South Bend, Indiana. She was a divorcee with a young daughter, Marilyn Vaughn. The couple was married in Merrill, Aroostook, Maine by the groom's father, Judge LeRoy Gardner, on 10 Feb 1946 and returned to live in Orlando, Florida.

Herbert would raise Virginia's daughter Marilyn as his own, along with his two daughters by Virginia; Gay Alice, born in 1947 and Trudy Ann, born in 1956.

Herbert worked at a number of different jobs, before becoming an Accountant. He was also a member of the highest degree in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
