Walter Neate Liddiard, 96, of Lafayette, New York died Saturday, September 10, 2005 at Iroquois Nursing Home, Jamesville, New York.

Walter was born July 21, 1909 in Syracuse, New York, the son of Wilfred and Eleanor (Wilder) Liddiard. He graduated from Central High School, Syracuse University and received his Masters Degree in Social Work from the University of Buffalo. Walter loved to run. He was a member of Syracuse University's Cross Country Team and competed in long distance races in Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Canada, including two Boston Marathons.

During WWII, Walter served 3 1/2 years in the South Pacific with the Red Cross as a counselor. He retired in 1974 after 25 years with the New York State Department of Social Services. He served a term as Indian Agent to the Onondaga Nation, was a member of the Board of the LaFayette Library and of the Town of LaFayette Ethics Committee. He was instrumental in starting the lacrosse program at LaFayette High School.

Walter is survived by his wife of 65 years, Hollis Bryant Liddiard; a daughter, Eleanor Liddiard of Syracuse, New York; a son and daugher-in-law, Phillip and Deborah Liddiard of Baldwinsville, New York and one granddaughter, Lauren Liddiard.

To celebrate Walter's life, there will be an informal gathering held on Friday, September 16, 2005, 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Columbian Presbyterian Church in the Session Room, corner of Routes 20 and 11, LaFayette, New York.

Burial will be private in Maple Grove Cemetery, Jordan, New York.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Grace Episcopal Church, 819 Madison Street, Syracuse, New York 13210 or to a charity of ones choice.
