Shirlee Fay Painter Kumar was the eldest of five children born to Lewis and Elnora Painter. She started her love of cemeteries, history and genealogy early on. The Masonic/Pioneer cemetery was a half-block from her home in Eugene, Oregon, and she frequently walked there on her way to school, reading the names of the famous pioneers who settled the Willamette Valley. In 1960, she married George Hurlburt, but sadly, he passed away from a heart attack a year later, while Shirlee was expecting their baby, a daughter, Georgia Grace. Shortly thereafter, she met and married Frank Kumar, to whom she was married until her death. They also had a daughter, Sushila Devi. In addition to raising her own two daughters, Shirlee also raised her granddaughter, Elizabeth. Besides her love of family, Shirlee enjoyed traveling, collecting stamps, and cultivating roses, of which she had many exotic varieties at her home in Danville, California. She worked as an insurance underwriter for 40 years, taking the time between raising children, working, and enjoying hobbies, to complete her master's degree. She was also a writer of poetry and was gifted in many ways. She was a longtime member of the Episcopal church. She is sorely missed by her family. Sincerest thanks to Corey for sponsoring her memorial page.
