GREENSBORO - Emmett Earl Carey, age 103, died on November 30, 2011, at Emeritus of Greensboro.

Mr. Carey was born in Philipsburg, Montana. A graduate of the University of Montana, he lived most of his life in Glendive, Montana, where he worked as business manager for a hospital. After his retirement in 1979, he lived part of the time in Greensboro and part in Billings, Montana. In 2003 he moved to Abbotswood in Greensboro following the death of his second wife, Dorothy Israel Carey.

Mr. Carey was also predeceased by his first wife Jane Hanly Carey, by his sisters Gertrude Johnson, Jerry Scherting, and Patty Cox, and by his son Patrick Carey. He is survived by his sister Pauline Jones of Lakewood, California, his sister-in-law Christine Johnson of Hall, Montana, his daughter and principal caregiver Mary Alicia Cox (Richard) of Greensboro, his stepson Wayne Israel (Theresa) of Tigard, Oregon, his stepdaughters Christine Gebert (Ferd) of Terrebonne, Oregon and Maia Rey (Keith) of San Anselmo, California, his daughter-in-law Wilma Carey of The Bronx, his granddaughter Anna Cox Trude (Vic) of Atlanta, his grandsons David Cox (Monica) of Minneapolis, John Cox of Charlotte, and Giovanni and Luca Carey of The Bronx, and his great-granddaughters Kira and Laurel Cox of Minneapolis. He was a communicant at St. Pius X Church.

Mr. Carey lived a full and active life. He was a proficient clarinetist and an excellent athlete. As a young man he played baseball and basketball, playing the former against some of the traveling Negro League teams and the latter against the Harlem Globetrotters. He remained an avid golfer into his early 90's. Sociable and gregarious, he made friends easily, even past his 100 birthday. His family and friends will miss his colorful stories from a long and busy life.
