Mrs. Irene King Covington Horton, 102, of Wadesboro, died Oct. 16, 2003.

She was born in Franklin County, Ga., on Oct. 7, 1901, a daughter of the late William Peter and Mary Brown King.

Mrs. Horton attended Young Harris College in Young Harris, Ga., Georgia State College for Women and the University of California at Berkeley. She was a retired teacher, having taught art in the Wadesboro elementary schools. She later taught at Lilesville Elementary.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Wadesboro on Lee Avenue, having served as a Sunday School teacher and on the women's missionary circle. She also served on the Hospital Auxiliary, Red Cross and the Ola Kala Garden Club.

The family will receive friends at Leavitt Funeral Home, Oct. 26, 4-5 p.m., and at other times at the Wadesboro home of Elinor and Bill Sorrels.

A graveside service at Eastview Cemetery will be held at 11 a.m., Oct. 27, Dr. Fred Senter officiating.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Thomas Jefferson Covington, Jr. and Edward Bennett Horton; her daughter and son-in-law, William Anderson and Barbara O'Flaherty; her brothers, George Lee King, Dr. William Russell King, Sr., Bartown England King, Dr. Oscar Doyle King, Dr. Luther Brown King and her sisters, Henrietta K. Brown, Louisa K. Teasly, Lucybelle K. Alexander and Willie Mae King; and her stepson, Edward B. Horton, Jr.

She is survived by her children, Thomas Jefferson Covington III and wife Jane of Asheville, Elinor Covington Sorrels and husband William Sorrels, Sr. of Wadesboro; her grandchildren, James Strotmeyer, Jr. and wife Mary Celeste of Charles City, Va., Mr. and Mrs. William J. O'Flaherty of Richmond, Va., Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. Covington IV of Asheville, John and Sarah Beard of Greensboro, Mr. and Mrs. William Pickens Sorrels, Jr. of Goldsboro and Barry and Lynn Kelly of Weddington; her great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Memorials may be made to the Music Ministry of First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 423, Wadesboro, N.C. 28170, or to the Scholarship Fund at Young Harris College, Young Harris, Ga. 30582.
