Thomas was born to William Garwood and Ann Rowe. He was age twelve when he came to Burlington, New Jersey with his father in 1681. Thomas became an apprentice to close family friend Elias Farr, who had paid for the families passage to America. Thomas was age eighteen when his father died and age twenty when his step-mother died in 1689. In 1690, twenty-one year old Thomas bought one hundred acres of land from Elias Farr. Thomas wed Jane White at Shrewsbury Monthly Meeting (MM) in Monmouth County, New Jersey on the 28th day of 7th month in 1693. They settled in Mount Holly, in Northampton Township. Mount Holly was on the King's Highway that ran from Shrewsbury to Philadelphia. They had:
1) William in 1695
2) Mary on 5 Aug 1697

In 1696, Thomas sold the one hundred acres of land he had bought from Elias Farr. In 1698, he and his two children were listed in the Will of Elias' wife Sarah. Next was born:
3) Sarah in 1702

Jane died in 1704 in present Mount Holly and burial location not known as Quaker cemetery didn't exist. Thomas wed Margaret Hancock on the 28th day of the 11th month, 1705 at Salem Monthly Meeting in Salem County, New Jersey. She was the daughter of Richard Hancock and Elizabeth Denn of Salem Township. They lived in Mount Holly and had:
1) Elizabeth in 1706
2) Thomas on 2 May 1707

In the 1709 Northampton census, forty year old Thomas and his twenty-five year old wife Margaret were listed. There was born:
3) Daniel on 15 Jul 1710
4) Isaiah in 1713
5) Ann in 1716

In about 1718, Thomas moved his family to Evesham Township in present Mount Laurel in Burlington County. They were Quakers and members of Haddonfield Monthly Meeting. The first of Thomas' children to marry was William, when he wed Jane Troth in 1724. Next was born:
6) John in 1721
7) Esther in 1724
8) Mercy in 1730

Thomas died in 1745 and in his Will, dated 1744, he named wife Margaret; sons William, Thomas, Daniel, Isiah, and John plus daughters Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth, Ann, Esther, and Mercy.
