John Avery was received into the Congregational church at Preston by letter from the Groton church. The strict Congregational (or Separatist) church was organized March 17, 1747, with six members whom John Avery was one. He was chosen deacon Aug. 5th, and ordained Aug. 16, 1747. He refused to pay rates to the regular church and was once imprisoned for that offense, an imprisonment he felt was honorable. He was made lieutenant of the Preston train band, 1739; captain, 1741; resigned May 7, 1750. He was deputy to the general court, 1743 (Conn. Col. Rec., 8:227, 372, 552). John lived at Avery's Pond, in the southeast part of Preston. He had a keen black eye, was of commanding presence, and was physically strong. The Groton Avery Clan Vol.1

He married, first, on Feb 19,1732 at Stonington, CT, Anne Stanton.

He married, second, Rachel (Parish) Parke, widow of Joshua Parke. Rachel died at Preston, CT on Aug 6, 1755.

He married, third, Phebe (Burrows) Moore. She was a daughter of Samuel Burrows.
