His parents are not known with any degree of certainty. Early resources indicate his parents may have been Christopher (b.c1550) and Johann Avery, but research published in 2004 fails to prove such a relationship existed.
His first wife, married Aug 28,1616 at Abbotskerswell, Co.Devonshire, was Margery Abraham, the widow of Thomas Stephens of Ipplepen,Co.Devonshire, and daughter of Robert and Dorothy ____ Abraham.
Christopher Avery, along with his son James, migrated to Groton,CT about 1636. Christopher's wife (James' mother) Margery never came to New England. In fact, she died in August 1626, and Christopher Avery married Alice Berdon on July 25,1630 in Wolborough,Co.Devonshire,England. Christopher and James left Alice behind in England, never to return. Christopher Avery was fined many times for "living apart from his wife", which was an offense in Puritan New England.
Most Averys in America descend from either this Christopher Avery or from another Avery immigrant progenitor, William Avery of Dedham. It is not yet proven whether any relationship exists between the two major Avery branches. But DNA evidence suggests no relationship exists.
For the most scholarly research available on the ancestry of James and Joanna (Greenslade) Avery, please see: Maureen A. Taylor, "The Avery Family: Ancestors and Descendants of Christopher Avery," (Boston, Mass: Newbury Street Press, 2004).
Male Descendants of Christopher Avery in a direct male line are in the Y-DNA Haplogroup I-M253 with a terminal SNP of L338. This SNP has been further delineated, and it is possible most direct male line descendants of Christopher are S1990 (a subgroup of L338)
Children(by first marriage): Mary Avery, James Avery.
