He was the son of the late Thomas Alvin and Carrie Lizzie Tyree Stevens. He was also preceded in death by a son, Varce M. Stevens Jr., and several brothers and sisters.

Mr. Stevens was a retired U.S. Navy Veteran with 27 years of service. He served in the Korean Conflict and Vietnam. His Navy participation included: 1st Class Radar & Chief Petty Officer, Nobal Air Technical Training Command (1958), awarded Good Conduct Award for Fidelity, Zeal & Obedience (1970 & 1978), Operation Specialist First Class (May 2, 1978), Active Duty to Fleet Reserve, after 23 years, Retired USS Navy on October 1, 1984, Stationed on USS Lake Champion, USS Cone, USS Valdez, USS Daniels, USS Voge, USS Sampson, USS Ellison, USS Correy, USS Butte, USS Rich, USS Boxer, USS Wasp, USS Willis, USS Forrestal, USS Shenandoan, USS Yosemite and USS Turner. He was a member of the Captain Lynn H. Folsom VFW Post #2166.

Funeral services were conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Januar 11, 2000 at Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel.

Graveside services and interment were conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 12, 2000 at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Military Honors will be provided by the Captain Lynn H. Folsom VFW Post #2166.
