Jasper was a Siamese cat who lived in my woods for several weeks before he got brave enough to face my other cats and come up on the porch. Once there, I noticed he had on a collar that had a current rabies tag and a name/address tag. The address was approximately 15 miles from my home.

I tried calling the number listed on the tag but the phone was disconnected. I drove to the address but the house was empty. I called the vet’s office and the lady confirmed the owner’s name and address and said that Jasper was neutered and current on his vaccinations. I left my name and number thinking maybe the owner would contact me.

Days, then months, then years went by. Jasper and I forged a strong bond. My daughter was buying a house and we went to the real estate office. The office was next to the house where Jasper used to live. I was telling the real estate lady about the cat and she laughs – You must mean Jasper! I had him for several years at that point and it was apparent that Jasper was well known and well liked. Before coming to live with me, he would visit at the realty office with the agents and their clients.

Jasper was a very social cat who enjoyed human company. In the mornings when I was getting ready for work, he would come and sit on the vanity while I showered and dressed. I always had to chase him out of the sink while I was brushing my teeth. He loved to get his hair brushed and would come running if you had the brush out.

Jasper was a talker who would follow me around the farm voicing his opinions. He was an intelligent cat that I taught to sit. He loved treats and would do anything to get them. He slept on my pillow at night. He would curl up on my lap like a shrimp. I'm not sure how Jasper ended up in my woods so many years ago, but I'm glad he did.

I grieve for my friend who happened to be a cat.

“You are my sunshine, my only sunshine.
You make me happy when skies are grey.
You never know, dear, how much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away.”
