Alfred Houpt, lifelong resident of Altoona, then three years ago when he became a guest at the Mennonite Samaritan Old People's home at Hew Holland, Lancaster county, died at the home yesterday morning.
Mr. Houpt was born on Oct 3, 1851, and was a son of Arnold and Susannah Reed Houpt, both deceased. He had been employed by the city highway department for a number of years and was known to his fellow workers as "Happy".
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Helen James, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, all of Buffalo, NY, and two sisters, Mrs. Minerva Herring of 200 Lexington Ave., this city, and Mrs. Margaret Kemberling of 10181/2 Walnut St., Hollidaysburg.
The deceased was twice married, first to Miss Aurella Brown of Broad Top City in 1878, to which union the daughter survives. He was married a second time to Mrs. Rachel Robinson of Hollidaysburg, who died a few years ago.
He was employed by a railroad for a number of years, nearly losing his life in an accident at Saxton.
He was a faithful member of the Mennonite church.
The body will arrive in Altoona tomorrow afternoon and be taken to the Gilden funeral home where it may be viewed at any time prior to the funeral. The funeral services will be held in the First Mennonite church, Fourth Avenue and Twenty-fifth street, at 10 o'clock Turesday morning with the pastor, Rev. Joseph Nissley, officiating. Interment will be made in Carson Valley Cemetery.
