Edward was the ninth child of George Anderson and Eliza Clifford Wayne. His grandfather, Captain George Anderson served in the American Revolutionary War and died aboard his ship, Georgia Paquet on a trip to Great Britain in 1775.
While growing up, Edward dreamed of being a famous naval officer. He studied at the Round Hill School in Massachusetts from 1824 to 1830 before returning to Savannah, Georgia. Fulfilling his dream, he was appointed acting midshipman on October 20, 1833 he served on USS St. Louis for a year. On November 24, 1834 was commissioned midshipman and assigned to the USS Constitution. Edward served in the Mexican American War and resign from the Navy in 1849 as a Lieutenant. He was elected Mayor of Savannah and served three terms as Mayor from 1855-1856, 1865-1869, and 1873-1876.
During the War Between the States, Edward served the Confederacy as an Officer in many rolls. In early 1861 he was with With Georgia Ordinance Department; MAJOR of Artillery 18 May 1861; GOVERNMENT AGENT, in England, purchasing army supplies, May-November 1861; INSPECTOR of Savannah batteries under General Robert E. Lee, December 1861; LT. COLONEL, Provisional Army of the Confederate Army (PACS) 30 April 1862; COLONEL, 09 July 1862; COMMANDED batteries guarding Savannah. Offered post of Assistant Secretary of War in 1862 but declined; and COMMANDED post of Charleston, South Carolina, January- February 1865, after Savannah was evacuated. General McLaws found Anderson, "a most valuable officer and an upright, honorable gentleman".
After the WBTS he was a Bank Director and a Rail President. He was also a member of many governing boards such as: Georgia Historical Society, the Independent Presbyterian Church, Massie School, Georgia Infirmary, Hospital for Negroes, Benevolent Society, Savannah Port Society, Chamber of Commerce, and many other organizations to numerous to list.
Edward married Sarah McQueen Williamson on 10 February 1841 in Savannah, Georgia and from this union had the following known children: Edward Clifford (1839–1876);
