Nellie Elizabeth Vincent was born in Dover, Kent, England in 1878, the eldest daughter of Charles James and Christina Elizabeth (Nicolle/Nicholls) Vincent. She traveled with her parents to a number of locations during her dad's service in the Royal Army.

It was during this time that she met Charles William Howlette. The couple was married in Valetta, Malta on July 1, 1896. Nellie, like her mother before her, traveled with her husband to the different locations where he was stationed while in the service of the Royal Army.

Her eldest daughter and 2 of her sons were born during their stay in South Africa. One son was born in Ireland, a daughter was born in India. Her youngest son was also born in Ireland.

On the 16th of December 1940, Nellie married her 2nd husband, William Thomas Preston. The wedding was witnessed by her eldest daughter Ivy and Son-in-law Ernest.
