Alice Elba Gerald was the 3rd child and first daughter of Orrin F. and Rose E. (Gerald) Gerald. Alice was born on the family farm, as was all the Gerald children.

On 19 Oct 1892, when she was only 14, Alice married her first husband, Robert Bruce Keddrel, who was 18 years of age. According to their marriage record, Robert was living in Stacyville and working as a farmer at the time of his marriage. Their son, Perley R. Keddrel was born 17 Aug 1893.

It's not clear exactly when Robert Keddrel died, but Alice is listed as a widow on the 1900 census. By this time, she was the mother of 2 children, Pearley R. by her first husband and Effie May Gerald, born in 1897, father unknown. Effie May was raised by Alice's brother Herbert, as his sister.

Alice is found on the 1900 census in Hersey, Aroostook, Maine, working as a servant for William & Elizaberth Bates. While working for the Bates family she met the man who would become her second husband, Albert Lincoln Bates, a widower with 2 children Percy & Bessie. The couple were married on 11 Oct 1900 in Hersey, Aroostook, Maine.
By 1910, the Bates family have moved back to Stacyville, Maine and are living on a farm, near where Alice grew up. The family consists of Albert's two children, Percy and Bessie and Alice and Albert's two children, Sylvia and Henry. Also living with the family is Ruel Bates, Albert's nephew. Alice is shown to have had 6 children with only 4 surviving at that time. The two children who were deceased where Alice E. (1906-1910) and Ethel A. (1909-1910).

In 1920, the Bates family is now living with Alice's brother Herbert on the Gerald family farm. the Bates family consists of Alice, Albert and 3 children, Orrin, Jerome and Edith. In 1911, Alice had given birth to twin girls, Cora and Clara, but unfortunately both had passed away before 1920. Edith would be Alice's last child.

The 1930 census finds the Bates now living in Houlton, and Albert no longer working as a farmer, rather than as a laborer. The family still consists of Alice, Albert and their three children, Orrin, Jerome and Edith.
Although Alice is still living in Houlton in 1940, she is again a widow, now living with her Brother-in-law, John Bates and her son, Jerome. The 1950 census is a repeat of 1940, with Alice listed as the Head of the household, living with her son Jerome and brother-in-law, John Bates.

Alice E. Gerald Keddrel Bates passed away on 17 Jan 1952 and was buried in the spring in Evergreen Cemtery in Houlton. She is buried next to her husband Albert.
