In 1831, the family migrated to Warren Co., IL, and there Avis grew to womanhood and married Ebenezer Cresswell an early settler in the area, on February 26, 1835. They had four children: John C., George Washington, Robert M., and Rufus Milton. Shortly after Rufus was born, in 1850, Ebenezer went to Multnomah Co., OR, where he established a homestead, and the family migrated to Oregon about 1852.
In January 1856, Ebenezer died, and before the end of the year, Avis married a widower, Edward Long, with four children of his own. Alas, tragedy struck again: their first-born child, Henry Long, lived for only two days. Their second child, Edward Ewing Long, died about age 20 in 1896. Their third child, Avis Elizabeth, died as a child, age 2, just three days before Avis Maria's death.
