Samuel Potter is the great-great grandson of John Potter, who signed the New Haven plantation covenant. His father and three sisters died in Plymouth CT when he was a teenager. Shortly thereafter his mother fell from a horse and broke her hip. Samuel worked the farm and his brother Jacob worked outside to pay for their mother's doctor. When the boys came of age, Samuel took the house and barn on one side of the river, and Jacob took the land on the other side of the river, where he built a house and barn and raised a family.

Samuel married Lydia Howe on 8 Jan 1765, and by this union, they had 10 chldren, all born in Plymouth CT. Lydia died in April 1796, and it appears that shortly afterwards, he joined a large contingent of Plymouth residents in migrating to Oneida county, including his brother Jacob. Several of his children joined him there, including Eunice (married Salmon Humiston), Mary (married Zophar Barnes), and Samuel (married Thankful Smith).

His tombstone inscription asks his friends to take care of his deaf son. It is not known which son this might be: possibly Jared b. 1770 or Daniel b. 1779, who are the only sons not accounted for.
