Martha Grace "Kit" was the 10th child of George David & Hester (Jones) Simms. She married William Mitchell "Mitch" Herbert on 20 Mar 1870 in Mercer Co., IL, about 5 years after her father's death. She lived for 49 years in Custer Co., NE, and when she died, she was survived by her brothers, Ed (J. Edwin) and Newt (Isaac Newton).

Kit and Mitch moved to Grundy County Iowa about 1876, when their daughter Rita was 2 years old. In 1882, they moved to Gates, Custer County, Nebraska, when daughter Rita was 8 years old.
