Nathaniel enlisted as a Private in the 47th Virginia Infantry on 10 March 1862. He was immediately detailed as a hospital steward, and was promoted Assistant Surgeon on 13 November 1862. He was then appointed an assistant surgeon with the 22nd Virginia Infantry Battalion (formed with six companies that had originally been raised for the 2nd Virginia Artillery) on 1 February 1863. The battalion was mustered out at Appomattox Court House in April 1865.
He worked as a merchant and bookkeeper after the War. He died, age 51, at 208 E. Clay Street of "Apoplexy", per Cemetery records.
The vegetation that had encircled his tree trunk-style marker was removed in in 2015 by the "Friends of Shockoe Hill Cemetery" organization. His upright military marker was added in October 2017 through the efforts of the Friends group.
