Captain Daniel Stiles of the Uniontown Police Dept was struck by a vehicle while directing traffic at the intersection of Edison St and Kaufman Ave NW in Uniontown. Captain Stiles passed away approximately 3 hours later at Akron City Hospital.

Every morning, a Uniontown officer spends 15 minutes moving rush-hour traffic through one of the town's most troubled intersections. On Tuesday morning Feb 15th, the assignment led to the death of Capt. Dan Stiles, who was struck and killed by a passing SUV.

Stiles, 46, a father of three, suffered head and internal injuries after being struck on state Route 619 (Edison St) at the Kaufman Avenue intersection. The intersection is manned by officers every workday from 7:45 to 8 a.m. to deal with traffic congestion around the school hour. Stiles was wearing a reflective jacket while positioned in the middle of the roadway. (The intersection now has a roundabout and the section of Edison St that travels through Uniontown is named in the memory of Captain Stiles.)

Stiles joined the Uniontown police force in 2009 after serving in neighboring Hartville, where he rose to the rank of sergeant. He was married and the father of three daughters. A Marine who served four years, including time overseas, Stiles brought a certain discipline to his law enforcement duties, his friends said. Stiles' former partners in the Hartville Police Department were somber as the news settled. He was an officer at the department for more than 15 years.

''He was a great guy, great officer. The one you wanted there with you. He was knowledgeable. And from his Marine Corps background, he was pretty [meticulous] about everything. He wanted to do a great job.''

Calling hours and funeral services will be held at the Lake Center Christian School and burial at the Greentown Cemetery on Saturday Feb 19th.
