Otis Allan Ashford, 59, of Junction City, Kansas, departed this life on Monday, October 2, 2006 in the ColmeryO'Neil VA Medical Center, Topeka, KS following a long illness.

He was born on June 12, 1947 to Johnnie M. Ashford and the late Mandel O. Ashford.

Otis attended the Port Huron area schools graduating from Port Huron High School in 1965.

After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam. He received the Army Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Bronze Star, Army Lapel Button, Overseas Service Ribbon, Vietnam Campaign Medal and Marksmanship Medal, to name a few.

Otis received an honorable discharge in 1992. After discharge he taught ROTC as a professor at Kansas State University. He loved fishing, hunting and playing dominoes.

Otis leaves to mourn three children, Yolanda Burney of Manhattan, KS, LaDawn Ashford of Port Huron and Danielle (Jemel) Salam of Atlanta, GA; seven grandchildren, Jaqwan, Taisjion, Terrel, Shauntia, Tyieshi, Chucky and Anisa; his mother, Johnnie M. Ashford of Port Huron; four sisters, Johnetta Samples of Auburn Hills, Bernadine Moore, Anita R. (Donald) AshfordJones and Joyleen Ashford, all of Port Huron; three brothers, Douglas E. (Young) Ashford of Killeen, TX and Kenneth Ashford and John (Mary) Ashford, both of Port Huron; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and relatives at large.

A service in Otis's memory will take place at 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 10, 2006 in Smith Family Funeral HomeNorth, 1525 Hancock St.

The Rev. John L. Portis, Pastor of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, will officiate. Interment will follow in Lakeside Cemetery under the direction of the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Council.

There will be a family hour in the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Contributions may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society.
