Hollie R. Allen, 95, of St. Clair, passed away at his residence on Sunday, October 8, 2006.
Hollie was born June 24, 1911 in Leon, West Virginia to Charles and Ina Allen.
He served in the army field artillery from 1932 to 1935, stationed in Hawaii.
He married Pearle E. Morehouse June 23, 1935 in Gallipolis, OH.
When WWII began, he reenlisted, again serving in the army field artillery, taking part in the Battle of Germany in 1945.
Trained as a cabinet maker, after the war he returned to Bradley, IL, where he worked at Kroehler Manufacturing Company until his retirement in 1975. While in Bradley, Hollie was active in Boy Scouts, square dancing, church work, bowling and golf. During his summer vacations, he would take his family on extended trips all over the United States.
Once retired, they moved to St. Clair to be with his son and family. In St. Clair, he continued his interest in square dancing, by calling dances and teaching. His great love however, was golf and he was well known at the area golf courses, especially that of Pine Shores in St. Clair. He belonged to Evergreen #9, F&AM, having served as it's master in 1983 and again in 2005. He also belonged to Scottish Rite, Royal Arch Masons, and the Shrine. Hollie stayed active in his church, First United Methodist. After his retirement, he began refinishing furniture and continued this hobby for the rest of his life.
He is survived by Pearl, his wife of 71 years; his son, Richard and wife, Betty of St. Clair; two grandchildren, Cheryl Westrick (Phil) and Reid Allen (Renee); four greatgrandchildren, Justin Wastell, Timothy Wastell, Linsday Kornik and Katlyn Westrick; and three stepgrandchildren, Christopher Westrick, Phillip Westrick and Scott Westrick. He is also survived by a younger brother, Charles Allen Jr. of Chillicothe, OH; sistersinlaw, Mabel Mohler of Gallipolis, OH, Amy Morehouse of Akron, OH and Mae Allen of Columbus, OH.
He will be sorely missed by all who appreciated his sense of humor and the twinkle in his eye.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Young Colonial Chapel Funeral Home, China Twp.
Visiting hours are 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. A Masonic memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
