William E. Heald was age 23 when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on July 22, 1862, at Boston, Massachusetts, for a term of two years, as an Ordinary Seaman, to the credit of Rockport, Massachusetts. He served on the Receiving Ship OHIO and aboard the U.S.S. CANANDAIGUA until September 8, 1863, when he was taken prisoner. He was confined at Camp Sumter, Andersonville, Georgia, as a Prisoner of War, and admitted to its hospital on April 14, 1864. There, he died of chronic diarrhea.
