Ben Kinkel's parents removed from Ft. Morgan, CO, to Littleton, CO, when he was about 5 years old. As an adult, he became the youngest person in Colorado to achieve the master plumber designation.

His obituary is not entirely accurate, possibly due to the death of President John F. Kennedy at about the same time. The obit fails to mention that his wife, Clarrinda Nettie "Peggy" Simms (d. 1949) was the mother of all of his children - Kathryn Young, Marjorie Kerr, and Benton Newton Kinkel.

After Peggy's death in 1949, he sold his home at 4th & Church Street (today's W. 57th & Allison) to Dr. Winter. Subsequently he married Bessie (Newton) Petrie in 1951, head teller at the First National Bank of Arvada, who lived at 7806 Robinson Way. Bessie was widowed the day she and her husband moved into this house - her husband literally dropped dead of a heart attack in the driveway. Bessie's children by her first husband were Virginia (Sizler) and Harold Petrie.

On moving to Arvada in 1924, Ben Kinkel joined the volunteer fire department, in keeping with his father's tradition of community service in the fire department. He was present when the first modern fire truck was delivered to the Arvada Volunteer Fire Department in 1924 and is shown in the iconic photo taken at that time.

His service to the town not only included work as building inspector. He was elected to the Town Council in the 1950s. He was also elected to the inaugural Board of Directors of the Arvada Fire Protection District in 1949.
