Eliza H. "Lyde" Alfriend, 98, died Nov. 23, 2005, at her residence. She was the widow of John S. Alfriend who died April 7, 1972. Born in Weston, W.Va., March 30, 1907, she was the daughter of the late Thomas W. Harrison and the late Genevieve (Ralston) Harrison. Survivors include her daughters, Genevieve A. Bryan and husband James of Media, Pa., and Gertrude A. Kimbrough of Denver, Colo.; a son, the Rev. John D. Alfriend and wife Nancy of Charles Town; 13 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Alfriend was the last of her immediate family. Since 1927, she had been a faithful member of Zion Episcopal Church where she had served as chairman of the Flower Committee for more than 30 years, former chairman of the Memorial Fund Committee, served several terms on the Church Vestry and had assisted with the Church Farmers Market for many years. She was a member of Friday Book Club, Jefferson County Garden Club, Jefferson County Historical Society and a former member of the Board of Directors of the Old Charles Town Library. During the Depression years, she operated a kindergarten in the basement of her home. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Zion Episcopal Church, 300 E. Congress St., Charles Town, WV, 25414, by the Rev. Melanie McCarley and the Rev. Dr. G.T. Schramm. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements by the Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town. Memorial contributions may be made to the church or The Old Charles Town Library, 200 E. Washington St., Charles Town, WV 25414.
