He graduated from George Peabody College in Nashville, TN with a teaching degree. He taught Latin and History at Georgia Military College in Milledgeville for eleven years. He then became superintendent of schools in Dublin, GA for several years, then principal of the city high schools in Macon. From there he moved to a position in the Dept. of History and Sociology at Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville. He served as delegate to the General Assembly in 1919-1920, where he was chairman of the Education Committee. In 1921-1922, he served as president of the Georgia Education Association, and later as Secretary of the Board. While in this last position, he tripled the membership of the association and was a leader in the fight to improve public education in Georgia. He earned a master's degree from Mercer University in 1924. In 1920, he became president of Gerogia Military College for two years, then served four years as Dean at Bessie Tift College where he taught Education and Psychology. His wife was the daughter of his supervisor. Prof. Oscar Malcom Cone, at Georgia Military College. He was leader in the fight for compulsory local tax laws to support public schools and for the Barrett-Rogers Act encourgaging consolidation of schools.
