Obituary Xenia Gazette April 9 and 12, 1890:
(condensed)
Shortly after six o'clock, last evening, Dr. Robert Stewart breathed his last at his home on North King street, at the age of 76 years. Dr. Robert Stewart was born in 1814 in South Carolina, York district, near Chester. The family, in company with a number of other families removed from South Carolina to Greene county, Ohio, in 1818. The family settled on the lands now occupied by John Collins, three miles east of Xenia on the Jamestown pike.

There were 13 children, eight boys and five girls. Of these there are now five living, John and Joseph, of Washington, Iowa, Samuel, of Dakota, Dr. James M., of Cedarville, and Jesse, of this place. His grandfather, William Stewart, who lies in Woodland cemetery, came from North Ireland. He was a Revolutionary soldier and fought under Marion.

On March 2, 1843, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Mary White, of Sugarcreek, Montgomery county, who survives him. To them were born ten children. Of these four are dead. Those living are Joseph C,, Samuel G., Robert I., William C., Mary L. and Paul, all living here, except Samuel G., who resides at Topeka, Kansas.

In this county and in Butler county he passed most of his life. An attack of pneumonia supervening on an attack of la grippe, was the immediate cause of his death. While a young man he taught school in this county. Many of the older residents will remember him as their teacher. Many will remember the notable case occuring during his services as a teacher, concerning the rights of children having African blood to attend the public school. From the decision rendered in this case the colored man dates his right, not only to educate his children, but his right to the franchise previous to emancipation.

Dr. Stewart took his medical course at the Ohio Medical College, Cincinnati. He retired from the practice of medicine ten years ago.

The funeral will take place from the residence Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Old friends of the deceased acted as pallbearers and were as follows: John Collins, Samuel Bigger, James Stewart, William Stewart, Rankin Gordon and
Milton Andrew. The remains were laid to rest in Woodland cemetery.
