Michael the son of Mitchell B. Carter and Reva L. Carter of Torrance CA entered service (Selective Service) in the US Marine Corps on March 8, 1966 in Los Angeles CA. He arrived in Vietnam and was assigned to Company M, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During Operation DESOTO while on patrol on the north side of the Tra Cau River, near the hamlet of Tuy Trieu in Duc Pho District, the Marines were fired on by VC snipers. Four men were wounded and LCpl Carter was killed by the hostile rifle fire.
